Breathscape
Shakarian Student Success Center Gallery, California, USA, April, 2023
Breathscape is the exhibition title in April 2023 in Shakarian Student Success Center Gallery at California State University Long Beach. The title, Breathscape, is a combination of breath and landscape. The installation includes two spherical light sculptures made with motors, PETG, and dichroic film. The strips are 8 feet long, as I wanted visitors to experience a bodily projection. Two human-sized, 6.5 feet in vertical, spherical light sculptures are named Undulating: Inhale and Exhale. They are suspended from the ceiling and revolve slowly at 1 RPM speed in each side corner of the room. It needs a distance between them to breathe and walk around space. The surface of these sculptures is covered with window dichroic film that transforms the original surface, PETG (Polyethylene terephthalate glycol. plastic), into reflecting multiple colors allowing certain lightwaves to pass through. The reflections and shadows of lines from the spheres circle the space, touching the floor and walls, and re-construct the geometric forms. This effect visualizes the interactive experience with landscape and activates the marginal space with lights and shadows of revolving sculptures.
